The Mackay Daily Mercury newspaper has reported that a new report, Economic Impact of the Mackay Airport, which was commissioned by North Queensland Airports, has found that the airport is giving the Mackay region a major economic lift, contributing $1.2 billion a year to the economy.
The study also found that the airport, directly and indirectly, generates more than 13,600 jobs in the Mackay region.
The Mackay Airport general manager said the latest findings highlighted the airport's vital role in the region's progress. He claimed that Mackay Airport is Australia's fastest growing airport, and is "the aviation epicentre of a thriving resources, business, tourism and agricultural hub".
$18 million has been invested in the recent upgrade of the airport, which has provided increased runway capability, to meet the demands of a growing number of aircraft movements, as well as better terminal facilities and extended car parks and taxi ranks to service the growing number of passengers passing through the facility.
In March last year, the Mackay Airport reached the milestone of one million passengers in a rolling calendar year.
