The Queensland Governor and Rockhampton Mayor have recently helped to unveil a memorial to Australia's second worst air disaster, that happened in Central Queensland during World War II.
A United States Air Force Douglas DC-3 / C-47 Dakota of the 22nd Troop Carrier Squadron / 374th Transport Group, crashed into bushland at Canal Creek, north of Rockhampton, in 19 December 1943, killing all 31 people on board.
Organisers said the memorial will help to raise awareness of this little-known tragedy. The Queensland Governor, Penny Wensley, says it is good to see the tragedy being remembered.
The disaster occurred six days before Christmas, where the troops on board were coming home. It was just a routine flight, and their parents, their families, their wives, their girlfriends were waiting for them.
The Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Margaret Strelow also praised the memorial's organisers.
