First Stage of Moranbah Airport Redevelopment Complete

The $46 million expansion of Moranbah airport is now one step closer with BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) announcing the completion of stage one works at the airport last week.

The stage one revamp, which cost $16 million, included resurfacing the airport runway, improving safety and enabling the airport to be used by larger capacity QantasLink Dash-8-Q400 aircraft.

The complete $46 million airport upgrade project will also include a new terminal, a surfaced parking area for the public, a new airport intersection to improve safety and airport access.

The second stage works, have already commenced at the airport and are due for completion by mid-2011.

Work is still under way on finalising plans for the new terminal building; however, the new facilities will be bigger, and include new seating, new luggage scanning facilities and an undercover baggage claim.

Work on the new terminal is expected to be completed by mid-2012. In the meantime a new temporary terminal will be developed.

When complete, the BMA-funded upgrade would ensure that the airport was able to efficiently cater for increased passenger growth and also support BMA’s operational needs.
