Early on
Sunday 23 July, it was a great surprise to have a United States Marine Corps (USMC) Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter pop into Rockhampton Airport. It is believed to have arrived direct from the United States Navy (USN) amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA-6) which is currently in waters near the Shoalwater Bay Training Area (SWBTA).
The mighty helicopter wore the serial number 163702 (Code 22) and was heard to use the radio callsign of "Kong 41". It was interesting to note that the only visible squadron markings were 'HMH-USA' - part of one of the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadrons.
After only a few minutes on the ground, the Super Stallion departed Rockhampton Airport back to the ship.
Sincere thanks to local plane spotter Scott H for venturing out and capturing these great photos of such a great visitor!
