This is the first time we have seen the 'new' but second-hand Beech 1900D Freight aircraft that GAM are going to take delivery primarily for Queensland operations for Team Global Express.  VH-YJD (UE-254) was previously N254GL of Alpine Air Express in the USA and was flown over to Melbourne (Essendon) where it was placed on the Australian Aircraft Register late last month.

The Loss of Agair Logistics P/L Gulfstream American Corporation 695A Jetprop Commander 1000 VH-HPY "Birddog 370" Near Mount Isa

Sadly, on Saturday 4 November, Agair Logistics P/L Gulfstream American Corporation 695A Jetprop Commander 1000 VH-HPY "Birddog 370" crashed between Cloncurry and Mount Isa.

Photo taken by Gavin Merten   ©

The aircraft was out on a bushfire-related flight out of Toowoomba and was uncontactable before vanishing from radar between Cloncurry and Mount Isa.

Air Traffic Control (ATC) reportedly tried for over an hour to contact the aircraft and as it got up past the Winton area, ATC had some other aircraft call "oxygen, oxygen, oxygen - descend to 10000 feet" over the radio as a warning.

An aircraft up near Normanton got through to VH-HPY and got them on to the area frequency and the pilot of VH-HPY said they were 'ops normal' and told ATC what frequency they had been on.  The pilot also described the GPS point they were going to work at and what they were doing there.

ATC cleared them to there at 28000 feet but a little bit later the aircraft dropped altitude and started heading North-East to East and was again uncontactable.

RFDS King Air VH-VJU "Flydoc445" was diverted towards Cloncurry and eventually found a crash site.

The Mount Isa based LifeFlight rescue helicopter VH-EHQ "Rescue 400" also headed out to look.  They eventually landed on the site of a large fire. Ground crews were on-site as well.

AMSA Challenger VH-XNE "Rescue 330" was also noted circling the area too.

Our thoughts and prayers go to all those affected by this terrible tragedy.

VH-FDW completed test flights in January 2022 - as pictured - but has spent much of the year in the hangar at Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast receiving pre-service fit-out and maintenance.  VH-FDW looked to finally leave the hangar at Caloundra last Wednesday 5 October for the RFDS Brisbane Airport base with this week's flight(s) being its first medical evacuation flights for the RFDS.

The new aircraft will be the fastest twin turboprop aeromedical aircraft in the country, with the next three scheduled to arrive in Australia in 2022, and two in 2023.

The Lottery Office Outback Air Race 2022 Kicks off and Calls into The Whitsunday Airport at Shute Harbour

The 11th Lottery Office Outback Air Race 2022 kicked off from Darwin Airport in the Northern Territory on Monday 29 August with some 31 light General Aviation (GA) aircraft taking to the air to not only compete but also raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS).

While not technically a 'race', the aircraft and aviators compete in a GPS-based navigation time trial which will take them through Far North Queensland, Central Queensland and ultimately finishing at Coffs Harbour.

During each leg, pilots nominate an elapsed time between two visual waypoints, receiving points for both time and location accuracy.

On Saturday 3 September, it looked like 28 aircraft departed Karumba in Far North Queensland in fixed-time intervals, venturing via an inland route - including some via a fuel stop at Hughenden - to the Whitsunday Airport at Shute Harbour where most were photographed arriving or parked up on Sunday 4 September as the competitors enjoyed a ‘rest day’.

The Race will continue on Monday 5 September with competitors flying from Shute Harbour to Gladstone Airport for another two-night stay before then heading to Roma Airport on Wednesday 7 September.  The Race will then continue to Goondiwindi and ultimately Coffs Harbour where the Race will conclude.

The Outback Air Race has raised funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. Since 1996. Competitors and spectators have raised over $3.1 million. Funds from each race go towards outfitting RFDS aircraft with essential medical equipment, vital for treating sick and injured patients across Australia.

You can check out some great photos and other highlights of the entire race on the SOAR website: https://outbackairrace.com.au/

We wish all the participants the very best of luck in their flights and urge you to support this great cause!

Sincere thanks to Lee Holloway at the Whitsunday Airport at Shute Harbour for sending through these great photos!
