The immaculately presented Super King Air - which I had a opportunity to have a closer look at while I was al Avalon earlier this month - arrived into Gladstone from its Toowoomba base, before operating to Emerald and back to Gladstone. It later departed Gladstone for Toowoomba.
Wagners is a family owned and operated business that was founded in Toowoomba in 1989. Wagners offers a wide range of construction products and services including composite fibre technology products, steel and reinforcing goods, cement and flyash, transport services, mobile concrete and crushing plants, oil and gas services and precast concrete. They have projects throughout Queensland (including Gladstone) and in Central Australia.
The Wagner family is one of Queensland's wealthiest families and recently is has been reported that they have started work on their own $100 million-plus Wellcamp Business Park and Airport on Toowoomba's western outskirts.
The facility, reportedly with a 2.87km runway capable of taking jets up to Boeing 747s, will be in use by the second half of next year and is expected to handle 500,000 passengers a year by 2019.
This bold move will be a "total game-changer for Toowoomba and our region", said John Wagner. The Airport was designed primarily as a gateway for fly-in fly-out workers and charter services to and from the booming mining and gas regions of the Surat, Galilee and Bowen Basins, but the Wagners also want regular scheduled passenger services, perhaps providing a solution to Brisbane Airport's recent woes.
Mr Wagner says that as the largest inland city in Australia after Canberra, Toowoomba will be an attractive destination for operators. And he believes Wellcamp Airport will be a viable alternative to Brisbane Airport which is struggling to fund a new parallel runway project.
