High-flying Central Queensland Airports

Move over Tasmania, here comes Moranbah and Mackay!

Mackay's Daily Mercury newspaper has recently reported that Brisbane Airport Corporation has recently released figures showing that Moranbah Airport in Central Queensland has pushed popular interstate tourist routes to Hobart and Launceston out of the year's top 20 domestic flight destinations.

Other Central Queensland towns benefiting from the resource boom such as Mackay, Gladstone and Emerald have also moved up in the list.

Growth in the Brisbane-Mackay route has been encouraging, with a 16.8% increase in passenger numbers on the route this March compared with the same month in the previous year.  A total of 79,000 passengers travelled between Mackay and Brisbane, which highlights the strength of the intrastate market, particularly in servicing the booming resources sector.
