Poor Weather Causes Delays and Diversions at Proserpine and Mackay Airports

Over the weekend a band of torrential rain passed through the Central Queensland coast causing some scheduled services to both Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast) and Mackay Airports to divert after being able to land.

One early diversion on Saturday 5 March was QantasLink Dash-8-Q400 VH-QOW which was operating the QLK2511 service from Mackay to Brisbane and diverted to Gladstone.  It later continued to Brisbane

Around the middle of the morning on Saturday 5 March, Virgin Australia Boeing B737-800 VH-VUR which was operating from Brisbane to Mackay as VOZ605, was unable to land at Mackay and diverted to Proserpine.  After about an hour on the ground at Prosie, VH-VUR then departed to Mackay where it landed about an hour later.  It later operated the delayed VOZ608 service back to Brisbane.

Later on Saturday 5 March Jetstar Airways Airbus A320 VH-VGD operating as JST832 from Melbourne (Tullamarine) Airport to Proserpine diverted to Mackay after a fair amount of holding.

VH-VGD later positioned up to Prosie and later returned to Tullamarine operating the delayed JST831.

Finally, on Friday 4 March, Virgin Australia Boeing B737-800 VH-YVA returned to Brisbane after being unable to land at Proserpine due to the weather while operating the VOZ1117 service from Brisbane.  The return VOZ1116 service from Prosie back to Brisbane was subsequently cancelled.

  1. VA1495 Brisbane to Hamilton Island was unable to land Sunday afternoon returning to Brisbane. Passengers on the return VA1496 were left on Hamilton Island to arrange accommodation without assistance from the airline and returned at 3pm Monday on a special service with the call sign VA9532
