The first charter to Moranbah – operated by Dash-8-300 VH-QQN – touched down in the mining hub as SKP717 on Tuesday 22 October. VH-QQN returned to Brisbane as SKP718. Then on Wednesday 23 October, Dash-8-300 VH-QQP also flew into Moranbah from Brisbane but as SKP719. It too returned to Brisbane, but as SKP720. Since then, this Tuesday and Wednesday flight pattern has continued.
Moranbah is certainly a fast-growing town, with two recently opened mine-sites heavily reliant on FIFO workers. Currently ‘schedules’ indicate that more than 50% of flights into Moranbah Airport are FIFO charters as opposed to Regular Passenger Transport (RPT) services.
Meanwhile, Skytrans – along with QantasLink and Alliance Airlines – has also recently commenced FIFO charter flights to Miles – in the middle of major Coal Seam Gas (CSG) explorations – with Dash-8-300 VH-QQN operating as SKP638 on Wednesday 6 November. It returned to Brisbane as SKP639. Then later on Wednesday, Dash-8-300 VH-QQP also flew into Miles from Brisbane but as SKP626, returning to Brisbane as SKP627. This week, VH-QQP and VH-QQN operated into Miles on Tuesday 12 November and Wednesday 13 November.
Incidentally, Skytrans continues to operate FIFO charters to and from Clermont Aerodrome each Monday night / Tuesday morning and Thursday night / Friday morning, along with the occasional FIFO charter to Biloela / Thangool Airport.
