A Pair of Australian Army CH-47F Chinook Helicopters A15-307 “Salty 47” & A15-306 “Easy 328” Spotted at Mackay Airport - Plus More!

On Tuesday 7 July, a pair of Australian Army Boeing CH-47F Chinook helicopters were spotted at Mackay Airport.  They appear to have flown down from Townsville via completing air work individually in the Whitsundays – at Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast) Airport and Hamilton Island Airport – before continuing down to Mackay Airport.

The two Chinooks from the Army’s 5th Aviation Regiment based at Townsville, where identified as A15-307 which flew as "Salty 47" and A15-306 as "Easy 328".

After some time on the ground, both Chinooks departed for Townsville with A15-307 "Salty 47" again completing air work at Hamilton Island Airport.

Meanwhile, also on Tuesday 7 July, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Airbus A330-200 / KC-30A Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) A39-003 as "Dragon 25" arrived into Rockhampton Airport from RAAF Base Amberley and parked on taxiway Juliet. A bit later it departed to the North and completed a missed approach at Townsville before then returning to Amberley.

Finally, on the civilian side of movements, also on Tuesday 7 July, McDermott Aviation Group / Machjet International Cessna 525C CitationJet CJ4 bizjet VH-PIY as "Machflight 41" flew up from the Sunshine Coast to Hamilton Island Airport before then flying across to Ayers Rock. It later returned to the Sunshine Coast.

Poolhurst Aviation Air Charter Services new Pilatus PC-24 jet VH-VTF flew up from Archerfield to Hamilton Island Airport before then flying down to Adelaide.

Port Macquarie Helicopters / Graham Aviation (Cairns) Cessna 510 Citation Mustang bizjet VH-8DD departed Hamilton Island Airport for the Sunshine Coast. It had arrived on Saturday 4 July from Port Macquarie and Rockhampton Airport.

Mabena P/L (Wagga Air Centre) Pilatus PC-12/47E NGX VH-A8K as "Wagga Air 669" appeared to fly South from a property near Dysart.  It had earlier flown up from Archerfield and also from Wagga Wagga the previous day.

UPDATE!  On Wednesday 8 July VH-A8L 'WA669' was again noted flying in the region ultimately arriving into Longreach Airport.  Then on Thursday 9 July, it departed Longreach Airport for Isisford, Wrotham Park and then Cairns.

Aerlink ATR72-500 VH-FVY Calls into Emerald Airport on New Fly-in Fly-out (FIFO) Charter Run - Plus More!

Late on Tuesday 24 February, Aerlink ATR72-500 VH-FVY started a new Fly-in Fly-out (FIFO) charter route to Emerald Airport from and back to Brisbane as AL428/9.

Also late on Tuesday 24 February, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Alenia C-27J Spartan transport aircraft A34-003 as "Wallaby 12" was noted completing airwork around Taroom Aerodrome while on a flight out of and back to RAAF Base Amberley.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday 25 February, Archer Aviation Service Cirrus SR22 VH-YJY flew up from Archerfield and Caloundra to Middlemount and then Dysart Aerodromes before then returning to Middlemount and then flying down to Biloela / Thangool Airport and then back to Caloundra and Archerfield.

And Curley Equipment P/L Textron (Cessna) 208B Grand Caravan EX VH-CUY flew from Cloncurry Airport to Mackay Airport.

UPDATE!  On Thursday 12 March, VH-CUY departed Mackay Airport and returned to Cloncurry Airport.

Avcair LearJet 60 Bizjet VH-AVL Pops into CQ Airports - Spotted at Longreach Airport - Plus More!

On Thursday 22 January, Avcair LearJet 60 bizjet VH-AVL flew up from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast to Emerald Airport and then Mackay Airport.  It then flew across to Longreach Airport where it was spotted below.

VH-AVL then flew back to Brisbane.

McDermott Aviation Group / Machjet International Cessna 525A CitationJet CJ2 bizjet VH-SUY as "Machflight 421" visited Hamilton Island Airport from the Sunshine Coast. 

AAA Aircraft / Flight Options (Australia) Cessna 550 Citation II VH-VDF arrived into Rockhampton Airport from the Sunshine Coast.

UPDATE!  On Friday 23 January, VH-VDF departed Rockhampton Airport and returned to the Sunshine Coast.

While American-registered (but seemingly Australian-based) Cessna 510 Citation Mustang bizjet N510MW flew up from Sunshine Coast to complete airwork at Bundaberg Airport before it then returned to the Sunshine Coast.

And Western Downs Civil (Chinchilla) Raytheon B200 King Air VH-85H, which had landed at the Whitsunday Airport at Shute Harbour from Chinchilla Aerodrome yesterday, flew down from Shute Harbour to Dysart Aerodrome and back. 

Finally, also on Thursday 22 January, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Alenia C-27J Spartan transport aircraft A34-005 as "Wallaby 64" was spotted visiting Longreach Airport from RAAF Base Amberley.

After dark, A34-005 was back in the air this time as "Wallaby 56" and noted completing airwork at Miles Airport while on another flight out of and back to Amberley.

Machjet (Machjet International) Beech B200C King Air VH-PUY as "Machflight 313" Spotted at Rockhampton Airport - Plus More!

On Thursday 16 October, Machjet (Machjet International) Beech B200C King Air VH-PUY as "Machflight 313" arrived into Rockhampton Airport from Cairns and then departed to Townsville.  During the afternoon, it reversed the flight. 

While Brescon Beech B300 Super King Air VH-WXS visited Dysart Aerodrome from Archerfield.

FlyPelican (Pelican Airlines) British Aerospace BAe Jetstream 3206 (Jetstream 32) turboprop aircraft VH-OTD was noted visiting Emerald Airport from Archerfield via Toowoomba-Wellcamp.  It also visited late on Wednesday 15 October on the weekly Fly-in Fly-out (FIFO) charter run.

And after flying South in June, Central Queensland Helicopter Rescue Service (CQ Rescue) / CQ Aeromedical Leonardo AW139 helicopter VH-XQ9 flew back up from Archerfield to Mackay Airport via Gladstone Airport.

Meanwhile, also on Thursday 16 October, Bowenville based (operated by Real Time Aviation - Brisbane) Cessna 525 CitationJet CJ1+ bizjet VH-JSZ flew up from Archerfield to Mackay Airport before then flying down to Rockhampton Airport and then back to Archerfield. 

While Air AP / Australian Corporate Jet Centres Bombardier BD-700-1A10 Global 6000 bizjet VH-AP7 departed Hamilton Island Airport for Brisbane before then heading over the Queenstown in New Zealand and then flying to Melbourne (Essendon).  It had arrived into Hamo from Adelaide at the start of the week.

And Robindale Group / Air Link Cessna 510 Citation Mustang bizjet VH-CMK departed Emerald Airport for Bundaberg Airport, the Sunshine Coast and Orange.  It had flown out to Emerald Airport from Orange via the Sunny Coast and Bundy on Tuesday 14 October (we missed it!).

Gulf Aircraft Cessna 680 Citation Sovereign Bizjet VH-PYN Back at Hamilton Island Airport - Plus More!

On Tuesday 23 September, Gulf Aircraft Cessna 680 Citation Sovereign bizjet VH-PYN visited Hamilton Island Airport once again from Brisbane.

Parker Aviation Ventures (Sydney) / Air Link (Dubbo) Embraer EMB-500 Phenom bizjet VH-PNM flew up from Archerfield to Hamilton Island Airport once again.  It then flew down to the Sunshine Coast. 

S&S Aviation / Business Aviation Solutions Bombardier CL-600-2B16 Challenger 604 bizjet VH-XPA flew down from Hamilton Island Airport to the Gold Coast.  It had arrived last Thursday 18 September. 

While McDermott Aviation Group / Machjet International Cessna 525C CitationJet CJ4 bizjet VH-PIY as "Machflight 421" landed Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast) Airport from the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane.

Machjet International Hawker Beechcraft (Beech) B200 King Air VH-8UY as "Machflight 313" arrived into Rockhampton Airport from Cairns and Townsville then departed to Brisbane and returned to Cairns during the afternoon. 

Machjet (Machjet International) Hawker Beechcraft B200 King Air VH-ZSY as "Machflight 55"  landed at Dysart Aerodrome from Cairns.  It then departed back to Cairns. 

Meanwhile, also on Tuesday 23 September, NSW based Piper PA-46-500TP Malibu VH-8AN flew up from Archerfield to Hamilton Island Airport. 

UPDATE!  On Sunday 28 September, VH-8AN departed Hamo for Bankstown.

Dalby based Piper PA-46R-350T Malibu VH-NYG visited Hamilton Island Airport from there.

Brisbane-based Piper PA-31-325 Navajo VH-ZMJ visited Bundaberg Airport from Archerfield via several aerial survey activities.

And Queensland Government (QGAir) Rescue (State of Queensland) Leonardo S.P.A. Helicopter (Agusta) AW139 helicopter VH-EGK ferried North to Townsville from Archerfield via Emerald Airport.

Metro Holdings Australia (Air Link - Dubbo) Cessna 525A CitationJet2 Bizjet VH-EJT Pops into Hamilton Island Airport - Plus More!

On Wednesday 20 November, Metro Holdings Australia (Air Link - Dubbo) Cessna 525A CitationJet2 bizjet VH-EJT arrived into Hamilton Island Airport from Archerfield and later departed to Bourke and then Melbourne (Essendon).

While Robindale Group / Air Link Cessna 510 Citation Mustang bizjet VH-CMK departed Emerald Airport for Bundaberg Airport and then the Sunshine Coast and Orange.  It had arrived two days earlier from those places.

And Deer Jet (China) Gulfstream Aerospace G-V-SP (G550) bizjet B-8255 was due to arrive into Hamilton Island Airport from Sydney but was unable to land due to bad weather and instead diverted up to Cairns.

UPDATE!  On Saturday 23 November, B-8255 flew down from Cairns to land at Hamilton Island Airport.

Meanwhile, also on Wednesday 20 November, Norair P/L Beech A36 Bonanza VH-PIZ visited Rockhampton Airport from its Townsville base. 

Beech 95-B55 Baron VH-MYM departed Rockhampton Airport for Gayndah Aerodrome yesterday afternoon and then this morning arrived back into Rocky before later departing once again back to its Gayndah Aerodrome base.

Austrek Aviation Beech B200 Super King Air VH-ZGD visited Moura Aerodrome from Toowoomba. 

NSW-based CJ Aerospace Raytheon B200 King Air VH-EEL landed at Longreach Airport from Toowoomba and then departed to Mount Isa and Borroloola.  It later reversed this flight.  

Austrek Aviation Beech B200 King Air VH-ZMW flew up from Toowoomba to Winton and then back to Emerald Airport and then back to Toowoomba. 

And Sunshine Coast-based Cessna 210 VH-ORR visited Dysart Aerodrome from its Caloundra base. 

Finally, also on Wednesday 20 November, the Bundaberg Airport based Conair Aerial Firefighting Dash-8-Q400MR C-FFQE "Bomber 141" and Agair Logistics P/L Gulfstream Aerospace (AeroCommander) 695-A JetProp 1000 VH-LMC "Birddog 125" both departed Bundy for Townsville.

UPDATE!  On Thursday 21 November, both C-FFQE "Bomber 141" and VH-LMC "Birddog 125" returned to Bundaberg Airport from Townsville.

Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Boeing B737-7ES / E-7A Wedgetail A30-002 Completes Airwork at Hervey Bay (Fraser Coast) Airport - Plus More!

On Wednesday 7 June, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Boeing B737-7ES / E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) aircraft A30-002 was noted completing airwork, including several missed approaches, at Hervey Bay (Fraser Coast) Airport.

It had earlier flown up from RAAF Base Williamtown to Townsville and flew down from there to Hervey Bay Airport.  It then returned to Williamtown.

Meanwhile, also on Wednesday 7 June, RAAF Alenia C-27J Spartan transport aircraft A34-004 as "Kaos 72" and A34-007 as "Kaos 71" returned South from Townsville to RAAF Base Amberley after flying up there via airwork in CQ a few days ago.

On this occasion, A34-004 "Kaos 72" completed more airwork to the South of Dysart before heading to Amberley. A34-007 "Kaos 71" flew down direct to Amberley.

A Pair of RAAF Alenia C-27J Spartan Transport Aircraft Complete Airwork at Dysart Aerodrome - A34-007 "Kaos 71" & A34-004 "Kaos 72"

Also on Monday 29 May, a pair of Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Alenia C-27J Spartan transport aircraft were noted flying from RAAF Base Amberley to Townsville but via both of them completing airwork at Dysart Aerodrome.

They were identified as A34-007 "Kaos 71" and A34-004 "Kaos 72" and both were photographed above as they arrived into Townsville where they are reportedly deploying for an exercise.

UPDATE!  On Wednesday 7 June, both A34-007 "Kaos 71" and A34-004 "Kaos 72" flew back down to Amberley from Townville following their exercise.  A34-007 flew direct but A34-004 "Kaos 72" again looked to complete airwork again at Dysart Aerodrome.

Australian Army NH Industries MRH-90 Multi-Role Helicopter A40-033 "Snooker 40" Passes Through Rockhampton Airport - Plus More!

On Wednesday 17 May, Australian Army NH Industries MRH-90 Multi-Role Helicopter A40-033 was noted passing through Rockhampton Airport.

It looked to arrive from Brisbane and later depart to Townsville.

A40-033 was heard to be using the radio callsign of "Snooker 40".

Meanwhile, also on Wednesday 17 May, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Alenia C-27J Spartan transport aircraft A34-010 as "Wallaby 33" looked to complete airwork at Dysart Aerodrome - twice - during a flight up from and back to RAAF Base Amberley.

Brisbane-based Cessna 525 Citation CJ2 Bizjet VH-TEY Arrives into Rockhampton Airport - Plus More!

On Wednesday 20 February, Brisbane-based Cessna 525 Citation CJ2 bizjet VH-TEY was noted flying into Biloela / Thangool Airport from Tamworth in New South Wales.  It has been visiting other regional airports in New South Wales after flying South from its Archerfield base on Monday.

After a few hours on the ground, the sleek Citation departed Bilo and flew up to Rockhampton Airport where it appears to be staying for the night.

UPDATE!  On Thursday 21 February, VH-TEY was noted departing Rockhampton Airport and returned to Archerfield.

Meanwhile, shortly after midnight on Wednesday 20 February, LifeFlight (Aeromed) Bombardier CL-600-2B16 Challenger 604 bizjet VH-URR "Ambulance 604" was noted also visiting Rockhampton Airport.  It arrived from and then later departed back to Brisbane.

And as posted below, also on Wednesday 20 February, the visiting AirMed Australia Cessna 510 Citation Mustang bizjet VH-NEQ departed Dysart Aerodrome for Mackay Airport.  It had flown into Dysart from Rockhampton Airport the previous day.  After a short while at Mackay Airport, VH-NEQ departed to Cessnock and then Bankstown.

Finally, also on Wednesday 20 February, Archerfield-based SOCATA TBM 700 N700BK was heard back in CQ, visiting Bundaberg Airport.  It was heard to be in North Queensland earlier in the week.

AirMed Australia Cessna 510 Citation Mustang Bizjet VH-NEQ Pops into CQ Airports

On Monday 18 February, AirMed Australia Cessna 510 Citation Mustang bizjet VH-NEQ was noted arriving into Biloela / Thangool Airport from Bankstown via Cessnock in New South Wales.

After a couple of hours on the ground, VH-NEQ continued to Rockhampton Airport where it looked to be spending the night.

UPDATE!  On Tuesday 19 February, VH-NEQ departed Rockhampton Airport for Dysart Aerodrome.

UPDATE!  On Wednesday 20 February, VH-NEQ departed Dysart Aerodrome for Mackay Airport.  It then returned to Cessnock and then Bankstown.

Meanwhile, also on Monday 18 February, FKG Air (Redjet Aviation) Hawker Beechcraft B200GT VH-FKB was noted back in CQ, also visiting Biloela / Thangool Airport.  It arrived from its Toowoomba base via Roma and Taroom.  It later departed back to Roma Airport and then Toowoomba.

A Special Post - Looking Back at Skytrans Airlines and Their 25 Years of Operations

As we’ve reported, Skytrans Airlines announced late on Friday 2 January that it had ceased operations with immediate effect.  The announcement came just one day after the airline celebrated its 25th anniversary of operations.

Looking back, Skytrans was founded by David and Sue Barnard in October 1990 as a charter airline, and began scheduled flights in 1993.  In November 2000, Skytrans merged with Air Swift Aviation, another small regional airline based in Cairns.  In June 2001, Skytrans took over services to Cooktown and Karumba from Macair Airlines.  In January 2005, the airline began to operate in competition with QantasLink on the Cairns to Townsville route, operating from its own terminals in both cities - I even enjoyed a flight on this route on board Cessna 404 VH-SZA in April 2007.

In December 2006, the airline was acquired from its founders by Australian Aviation Holdings, which also owned Queensland Regional Airlines and Inland Pacific Air.  Skytrans and merged in 2006, operating under the Skytrans banner.  With the closure of Macair in 2009, the airlines expanded their routes to Cape York.

At the end of 2014, Skytrans had two bases – in Cairns and Brisbane – and operated both scheduled and charter flights to as many as 25 locations throughout Australia, Papua New Guinea and the South-West Pacific. It was a major operator of the Dash 8 type aircraft in Australia, seating 36-50 passengers in both Dash-8-100 and Dash-8-300 types.

Before the merger with QRA in 2006, Skytrans also operated smaller commuter aircraft including Cessna 310 and Cessna 404 aircraft, along with a single Beech B200 King Air.

In 2013, Skytrans established their most recent base in Toowoomba with scheduled flights operating from Brisbane to Toowoomba, Charleville, Quilpie, Windorah, Birdsville, Bedourie, Boulia, Mount Isa, St George, Cunnamulla and Thargomindah.  Skytrans also launched flights from Toowoomba to Roma however, these flights only ran for a few months before the route was ceased.  With the opening of Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport, and the launch of QantasLink flights to Wellcamp from Sydney, Skytrans closed the Toowoomba base in November 2014 and ceased its own Sydney to Toowoomba service, despite strong passenger numbers.

Finally, from Wednesday 31 December 2014, Skytrans lost its contract to operate the Queensland Government subsidised routes, Gulf, Western 1 and Western 2 to Regional Express (REX).  This reportedly left the future financial viability of Skytrans in question, and is perhaps one of the main reasons why the Managing Director, Simon Wild, took the action to shut down operations of this great great Australian airline.

Their last Fly-in Fly-out (FIFO) charter flight into Brisbane was on Friday 19 December:

SKP671 Dash-8-300 VH-QQP DH8C Brisbane-Miles-Brisbane.

The FNQ Skies Blog captured these images on Saturday 3 January of various Skytrans aircraft parked around and near the Skytrans Engineering facility at Cairns Airport:

Noted at Cairns were VH-QQA, VH-QQB, VH-QQC, VH-QQF, VH-QQG, VH-QQI and VH-QQM.

Dash-8-300s VH-QQN and VH-QQP remain at Brisbane Airport, while former Skytrans Dash-8-100s VH-QQD, VH-QQK and VH-QQL are operating out of Perth Airport with Maroomba Airlines whom they are leased to from Westpac.

Cairns-based RFDS Hawker Beechcraft B200 King Air VH-FDG Visits CQ Airports Recently

Since late December, I've noticed that a 'different' King Air of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) has called into some CQ Airports - Mackay, Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast) and Dysart Airports.  Investigations reveal that the RFDS King Air is Cairns-based Hawker Beechcraft B200 King Air VH-FDG.

VH-FDG uses the callsign "FlyDoc 456".

CQ Plane Spotting Historic Spot - Dysart Aerodrome Fly-in Fly-out (FIFO) and Freight Flights in 2008

In 2008, I made regular car trips to the small Central Queensland mining town of Dysart - a major service centre with a population of around 3000 people who mostly work for the nearby coal mines including the (now closed) Norwich Park coal mine and Saraji coal mine.  In 2008, the small Dysart Aerodrome - located about 4km from Dysart on the Middlemount (connection) Road - received regular fly-in fly-out (FIFO) charter flights operated by Skytrans Airlines Dash-8-100 aircraft and General Aviation Maintenance (GAM) Dornier DO228 aircraft, mostly from Mackay and Brisbane.

During 2008 at Dysart Aerodrome, I spotted Skytrans Dash-8-100s VH-QQC (in the airlines' very old colour scheme), as well as VH-QQJ during September wearing a "Cairns Taipans" sticker highlighting the airlines' sponsorship of the North Queensland National Basketball League (NBL) team.

VH-QQJ was spotted operating one of these FIFO flights from Dysart to Mackay Airport.

In November 2008 I spotted GAM Dornier 228 VH-VJE as it departed Dysart for Emerald and Brisbane.  The GAM Dorniers were became a regular sight in CQ for a period of time, operating (mostly) to Emerald, but also to Dysart, from Brisbane.

During weekday evenings and early mornings, Toll Express (Toll Aviation) Metros (Metro III Expeditor VH-UZI is shown below) also called into Dysart Aerodrome operating freight flights between Brisbane and Mackay, via Biloela / Thangool, Emerald, and Dysart.

These Metros were often met at Dysart by smaller aircraft - often (at the time) Central Highlands Air Transport (CHAT) - now Advance Aviation - Piper PA-31 Navajos - like VH-BCQ shown again in September 2008.

I really enjoyed seeing these lovely old images the other day whilst sorting through some old photos - and I certainly feel happy and satisfied to share them with you!

Dysart Aerodrome Faces Permanent Closure - But Not if Local Aviators Can Help It!

After grounding flights out of Blackwater Airport, there are reports that BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) will permanently close Dysart Aerodrome, leaving local pilots and charter flight operators fuming.

The aerodrome was reportedly closed to all aircraft except medical emergency flights in mid-May, with BMA promising to reveal a reopening strategy to Dysart Aero Club (DAC) members.

But DAC stalwart Myles Breitkreutz said an audit on the Blackwater and Dysart facilities was an excuse to deem them commercially unviable when BMA resources had been heavily sunk into Moranbah Airport.

He also claimed that BMA is also creating safety issues by closing these airports.
