Tigerair to Axe Mackay Airport to Melbourne Services from September

Very disappointing news in the Mackay Daily Mercury newspaper on Tuesday 7 June that Tigerair (Tiger Airways) Australia has announced that it will cease operating services between Mackay Airport and Melbourne from Monday 7 September.

The report suggests that following an extensive review, Tigerair took the action of cutting the service in response to continued insufficient consumer demand on the sector.  This move comes despite continued efforts by Tigerair to stimulate demand through airfare pricing, schedule changes and marketing initiatives.  The service is just no longer sustainable.

Passengers booked to travel on Tigerair services to and/or from Mackay from Monday 7 September are to be notified directly by the airline from this week and offered a free of charge transfer onto Virgin Australia services via Sydney or Brisbane, a full refund, or credit to fly with Tigerair at another time.

The airline announced its return to the Mackay market in October 2012, after a previous 14-month hiatus.
