Alliance Airlines buyout: Sale won’t affect new $60 million maintenance hangar under construction at Rockhampton Airport

It was announced on Thursday 5 May that Qantas had reached an agreement to buy the Brisbane-based Alliance Airlines company.

The sale of Alliance Airlines will have no ramifications on its $60 million maintenance hangar currently under construction at Rockhampton Airport.

The new facility will be made up of a three-bay hangar about 130 metres wide, 16 metres tall and 65 metres deep and would see Alliance Airlines move its maintenance work on the aircraft from overseas to Rockhampton.

The Rockhampton project had received funding from the Queensland Government and $25 million from the Federal Government and a loan of up to $30 million from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund.

Construction of the new hangar began in late 2021 and reached a major milestone in March 2022, as the concrete was poured to form the footings and walls of the facility.

The construction was tracking to finish three weeks early and be finished by Christmas this year.

Qantas obtained a 19.9 per cent stake in Alliance Airlines back in February 2019 and the plans to fully buy-out the company have been in the works for the past six months.

The agreement is now subject to an approval from the consumer watchdog, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), and the Alliance Airline shareholders.
