Arriving into Rockhampton Airport around lunch time on Saturday 27 July was a pair of United States Marine Corps (USMC) Bell UH-1Y Huey/Venom helicopters.
The Bell UH-1Y Venom (also called 'Super Huey') is a twin-engine medium size utility helicopter, part of the USMC H-1 upgrade program. The UH-1Y variant modernizes the UH-1 design, with the most noticeable upgrade being a four-bladed, all-composite rotor system. It also features upgraded engines and transmission, a digital cockpit with flat panel multifunctional displays, an increased payload, greater range, a reduction in vibration, and higher cruise speed.
The two UH-1Y choppers to call into Rockhampton on Saturday were 168407 / EP-30 and 168408 / EP-31, of the Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265 (VMM-265) "Dragons". They touched down briefly at "Camp Rocky", and were heard to be using the radio callsign of "Dragon 31".
A couple of great looking choppers - thanks to the Rockhampton Plane Spotters for sending through their great images!
