On Monday 8 July, the United States Army and United States Marine Corps carried out live firing with their HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) in the Shoalwater Bay Training Area (SWBTA).
The event involved the integration of a number of lethal and non-lethal capabilities, and include a US Army and US Marine Corps HiMARS, the US Marine Corps Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II and the US Army Boeing AH-64E Apache helicopters.
As mentioned, new US Army Boeing AH-64E Apache helicopters have been transported over the Australia and are reportedly being used ‘in anger’ for the very first time.
The HiMARS demonstration was complemented by a range of other assets including a US Marine Corps C-130J Transport Aircraft, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Boeing P-8A Poseidon Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (A47-003 “Blackcat 17”), RAAF Boeing B737-7ES / E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) aircraft (A30-005 “Mitchell 01”), as well as Australian Army S100, and the Royal Australian Navy Scan Eagle Unmanned Aircraft Systems, and Amphibious Pre Landing Force Operators from the 2nd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment.
Talisman Sabre 2019 (TS19) is a bilateral combined Australian and United States (US) training activity. TS19 is designed to practice the respective military services and associated agencies in planning and conducting Combined and Joint Task Force operations, and improve the combat readiness and interoperability between Australian and US forces.
TS19 will be the eighth iteration of the exercise and consists of a Field Training Exercise incorporating force preparation (logistic) activities, amphibious landings, land force manoeuvre, urban operations, air operations, maritime operations and Special Forces activities.
